One Heart - Vesak 2008 Oil Procession

May 12th, 2008 by creativespark

Oil Lamp Procession

Veggie lovers please scroll down… this is mainly a reminder for the carnivores/omnivores amongst us, but there’s some news for everyone at the bottom.

Meat-eaters, Please Note…

Don’t forget… if you’re joining the procession on Friday (16th), you’ll need to be vegetarian from 11pm on Tuesday (13th). If you’re joining the procession on Saturday then it’s the same time on Wednesday for you.If you’re not joining the oil lamp processions, you might still need to note that to walk the lotus path you need to be vegetarian from 11pm the day before.

Everyone Else…

One other thing to note about the oil lamp procession… participants (including those who aren’t taking part themselves but have asked family members to do so on their behalf) should not attend any funeral events or auspicious events (like wedding dinners, birthday celebrations etc) for 12 days after. And now that I’m done with the stern warnings… I can do the fun part and announce something new this year! Keep a lookout for the Oil Lamp Procession booklets at the site. It’s the first of a series and the team have done a fantastic job of explaining and translating the symbols, chants and meanings. There’s lots of interesting stuff in it, so grab a copy to take home and keep.

The Shrine’s open on that day and I’ve placed my order for lovely weather, so see you there.

One Heart - Vesak 2008 Scheduled Events

April 9th, 2008 by creativespark

One Heart Logo SmallWe’re looking forward to everyone coming together in celebration again this year, and as usual there’ll be plenty going on.

As always, family and friends of members, residents of the area and members of the public are warmly welcome to come down to pay respects to the Buddha, take a look around, enjoy the music and performances on the stage or just relax in the shade of the marque with a bottle of water. Each year we open with a lion dance, and there are some interesting events during the celebration. We’ll post more about these in the leadup to Vesak, so do check back. Vesak is an important time of worship for members of Moh Hong Buddhist Shrine, so we do ask that visitors be respectful of any ceremonies or member activities which might be going on.

A summary of the timing of the key member events is below:

Vesak 2008 Events

Basic Guidelines

Offerings for the Deceased (Seet Goh)

  • One share of offerings is recommended for each deceased member of the immediate household (i.e. husband, wife, parents, or children). Not recommended for distant relatives e.g. parents-in-law. Each deceased member can receive multiple offerings but these should be made by different relatives.
  • Please provide names of the deceased, the person making the offerings and the relationship during registration.

Healing and Blessing

  • All participants are advised to observe vegetarian diet beginning at 11:00pm on 15th May (Thursday).
  • There will be an allocated time for this event which will be advised later.

Oil Lamp Procession

  • All registered participants are advised to observe vegetarian diet as indicated above. For aged participants, please advise the registrar if you require assistance.
  • Menstruating ladies are advised against participating in this event and lighting the oil lamp in person. They can, however and appoint a proxy (who must observe the same guidelines) while they observe the procession on the sideline.
  • Please arrive 30 minutes before the recommended time to enjoy the serene ambience
  • Upon successful completion of this event, participants are advised to avoid attending funeral wakes, celebratory events such as new born’s first month, and wedding preparation for the following 12 days.

Offerings of Ten Gifts (Chap Hiang)

  • Participants for this event are appointed by Master. Participants will be notified in due time.
  • Upon successful completion of this event, participants are advised to avoid attending funeral wakes, celebratory events such as new born’s first month, and wedding preparation for the following 12 days.

April 8th, 2008 by creativespark

One Heart Logo SmallOnce again we’re in the padang area opposite Block 156 Bishan Street 11. Hopefully everyone found convenient places to park last year, or worked out where to jump off the 410 bus from Bishan MRT. Here’s a map of the location. Carparks are marked CP or MSCP and bus routes are listed at the bottom of the map.

If you’d like a high-res one suitable for printing, we’ve got one online here.

One Heart - Vesak 2008 Pre-Registration

April 7th, 2008 by creativespark

One Heart

Yes, it really has been nearly a whole year, and Vesak is on the horizon again. Once again the theme of our celebrations is One Heart. This is to remind us of Master’s teaching to have “one heart”, and as we go about marking the day to remember to have one common objective, one focus, one syncopated beat and one voice.

We’ll post full details of the location and timetable over the next couple of days, but a quick summary:

  • Prayer Hours: Thursday, May 15 to Monday, May 19, 9am to 10.30pm
  • Location: Opposite Block 156, Bishan Street 11 (same as last year)

Some of the events require pre-registration. If you haven’t done so yet, pre-registration is open on the following days:

  • Sunday, April 13, 10am to 2.30pm
  • Sunday, April 27, 10am to 3pm

Pre-registration is required for the following events:

Becoming Buddha On The Web - And Other Ted Talks

March 2nd, 2008 by creativespark

Buddha TV

A new series of Ted Talks is currently underway in the US.

I don’t know if you’re familiar, but they’re a mind-blowing series of lectures by some of the world’s greatest thinkers, on a whole range of topics, from the environment to space. As they happen during the $6000 a day conference they’re posted online, so people like us can watch them for free.

I just wanted to draw your attention to a few I thought you might like.

Bob Thurman: Becoming Buddha — on the Web
In our hyperlinked world, we can know anything, anytime. And this mass enlightenment, says Buddhist scholar Bob Thurman, is our first step toward becoming Buddha. When we can know everything, we can see how everything is interconnected — and we can begin to feel compassion for every living being.

Matthieu Ricard: Habits of happiness
What is happiness, and how can we all get some? Buddhist monk, photographer and author Matthieu Ricard has devoted his life to these questions, and his answer is influenced by his faith as well as by his scientific turn of mind: We can train our minds in habits of happiness. Interwoven with his talk are stunning photographs of the Himalayas and of his spiritual community.

Dan Gilbert: Why are we happy? Why aren’t we happy?
Psychologist Dan Gilbert challenges the idea that we’ll be miserable if we don’t get what we want. Our “psychological immune system” lets us feel real, enduring happiness, he says, even when things don’t go as planned. He calls this kind of happiness “synthetic happiness,” and he says it’s “every bit as real and enduring as the kind of happiness you stumble upon when you get exactly what you were aiming for.”

Rick Warren: Living a life of purpose
Pastor, philanthropist and author Rick Warren reflects on how the success of his book The Purpose-Driven Life triggered his own crisis of purpose. What should he do with this unanticipated wealth and attention? Warren uses his own story to explain the central tenet of his teaching: that the antidote to spiritual emptiness is recognizing what we have been given — wealth, creativity, talent — and using those gifts to make the world a better place.

Dan Dennett: A secular, scientific rebuttal to Rick Warren
Philosopher Dan Dennett thinks of religion as a natural phenomenon, a human feature that has evolved over millennia to meet each society’s changing needs. From this, he makes a brilliant case for studying religion — all religion — as rigorously as we do science. Dennett, who followed Rick Warren on stage at TED2006, then takes a few minutes to analyze Warren’s The Purpose-Driven Life and dispute several of its claims — among them a belief that in order to be moral, one must deny evolution.

Barry Schwartz: The paradox of choice
Psychologist Barry Schwartz takes aim at a central belief of western societies: that freedom of choice leads to personal happiness. In Schwartz’s estimation, all that choice is making us miserable. We set unreasonably high expectations, question our choices before we even make them, and blame our failures entirely on ourselves. His relatable examples, from consumer products (jeans, TVs, salad dressings) to lifestyle choices (where to live, what job to take, whom and when to marry), underscore this central point: Too many choices undermine happiness.

Daniel Goleman: Why aren’t we all Good Samaritans?
Daniel Goleman, author of Emotional Intelligence, asks why we aren’t more compassionate more of the time. Sharing the results of psychological experiments (and the story of the Santa Cruz Strangler), he explains how we are all born with the capacity for empathy — but we sometimes choose to ignore it.

You can watch them online if your broadband is broad enough, or download them to your computer to watch later. If you have any comments on any of them, please do post them here. It would be great to hear what you think.

Happy viewing.
