Raising Funds to Build a Place of Worship in Singapore
Moh Hong Buddhist Shrine has a temple in Pontian, Malaysia. In Singapore, the Shrine is presently operating from a residential address. As a result, our activities are self-restricted, to avoid inconveniencing and disturbing the neighbours.
Our Master’s underlying philosophy is – no gain without due effort – 无功不受禄。As such, outright public donations are not permitted. It is this fundamental philosophy which has guided the fund raising operations for the Shrine – there must be an exchange of service or goods for the money received.
In 2010, volunteers of the Shrine banded together to establish the Moh Hong Buddhist Shrine Building Fund, to raise investment capital for a permanent home for our Master’s activities.
In line with our Master’s philosophy, the Building Fund does not accept outright donations and the volunteers raise, on average, around sixty thousand dollars a year through organised tours, bake sales, social events etc, which are all opened to friends and families.
The Building Fund is managed by a committee and adheres to Singapore’s laws regarding fund raising by non-profit groups. The current chairman of our Building Fund committee is Dr Thng Choon Hua , Senior Consultant, National Cancer Center and Adjunct Associate Professor, Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School.
